The T-money Card, Explained

The T-money Card, Explained (And Why I Switched to Using It on My Phone) If you've ever watched a K-drama and noticed a character casually tap a little card at a subway gate, or hand it over at a convenience store without a second thought, that's T-money. I've been using it for years now, and it's genuinely one of the most useful things I own here — not just for visitors, but for actual daily life. I still remember getting my first T-money card at a convenience store near my apartment, back when carrying a physical card was just the only option. These days, though, I don't even carry the card anymore. I load it straight onto my phone, and honestly, it's changed how I move through the city in small but real ways. So What Is T-money, Exactly? At its simplest, it's a rechargeable transit card that works nationwide — not just in Seoul. A card (or phone) loaded up in Seoul works just as well in Busan, Daegu, or on a bus out on Jeju. Jjimjilbang : What's Actually Happening in Those K-Drama Sauna Scenes

Jjimjilbang: What's Really Happening in Those K-Drama Sauna Scenes If you watch K-dramas, you've probably seen this scene more than once. A group of characters in matching pastel T-shirts and shorts lie on a warm floor, some with towels folded into funny shapes on their heads, peeling eggs and drinking something from a small bottle. That place is a jjimjilbang (찜질방), and it's a much bigger part of everyday life in Korea than the dramas show. I still remember my first time at a jjimjilbang. My whole family went together: my mom, my dad, my younger brother, and me. So when I see these scenes in dramas, they don't feel like a strange detour. They feel like a memory. So What Is a Jjimjilbang? A jjimjilbang is a large public bathhouse with sauna rooms and a shared lounge, and many are open 24 hours. Think of it as a bathhouse, a sauna, a nap room, and a snack bar under one roof. You pay one entry fee (at my local jjimjilbang it's about 10,000 won) and you get: Separate ...

What's In a Korean Convenience Store? A Guide for K-Drama Fans

Image
What's In a Korean Convenience Store? A Guide for K-Drama Fans Step outside my place at basically any hour, and there's a convenience store within a minute or two. Usually two, sometimes even three, if you count the ones just slightly further down the block. That's not unusual here — it's just how Korean cities are built. And I've come to rely on that more than I probably should. Something comes to mind at eleven at night, some random thing I suddenly realize I need, and I know I don't have to plan around it. I just walk out the door. It didn't used to be like this, or at least it didn't feel this way. I remember convenience stores mostly stocking snacks and drinks, the basics you'd grab in a hurry. These days they carry actual daily necessities too — enough that I've gone in needing something completely unrelated to food and walked out having solved the problem. When my kid was younger, there were more than a few nights I suddenly remembered...
